James Brendan Bennet Connolly, also known by the Irish name Séamas Breandán Ó Conghaile, was an American athlete and author. Born in 1868, Connolly achieved historic renown at the dawn of the modern athletic era.\n\nIn 1896, Connolly secured his place in sports history by becoming the first modern Olympic champion. Following his athletic achievements, he established a career as an author, active until his death in 1957.
