Hugh Conway was the pen name of Frederick John Fargus, an English novelist who achieved brief but notable literary success in the early 1880s. Born in Bristol to an auctioneer, Fargus initially trained for a maritime career, joining the school ship Conway at the age of thirteen to prepare for the merchant navy. However, he eventually returned to Bristol, where he was articled to an accounting firm.\n\nFollowing his father's death in 1868, Fargus took over the family auctioneering business. In 1871, he married Amy Spark, the daughter of a Bristol alderman, with whom he had four children. While managing his professional and family life, Fargus began writing fiction under his pseudonym, drawing inspiration for his pen name from his formative years aboard the training ship. He passed away in 1885, shortly after establishing his reputation as a novelist.
