John Esten Cooke was an American novelist, poet, and prose writer of the nineteenth century. Born in 1830, Cooke pursued a literary career alongside his brother, the poet Philip Pendleton Cooke. His life and writing career were marked by his active participation in the major historical events of his era, most notably the American Civil War.
During the conflict, Cooke served as a staff officer in the Confederate States Army cavalry. He initially served under Major General J. E. B. Stuart, with whom he shared close family ties, as Stuart's wife, Flora, was Cooke's first cousin. Following the death of General Stuart, Cooke continued his military staff service under Brigadier General William N. Pendleton. His dual identity as both a dedicated military officer and a literary figure defined his place in nineteenth-century American literature.
