Florence Chambers (later known as Florence Newkirk) was an American competitive swimmer, athletic instructor, and civic leader. Born in November 1907, Chambers achieved early recognition as an elite athlete, representing the United States at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. Competing in the 100-meter backstroke event, she advanced to the finals and secured a fourth-place finish on the international stage.
Following her Olympic career, Chambers channeled her expertise into coaching and education. In the mid-1920s, she founded the Florence Chambers Swim Club, establishing herself as a successful swim coach and instructor. Her work in athletics laid the foundation for her subsequent career as a prominent figure in Southern California.
In her later years, Chambers transitioned into civic and commercial life, becoming a leading businesswoman, community leader, and philanthropist in San Diego County. Known by her married name, Florence Newkirk, by May 1964, she remained an active and influential figure in her community until her death in September 1979.
