Louisa Stuart Costello was an Anglo-Irish author, illustrator, and painter who established a prolific and diverse literary career during the nineteenth century. Born either in Ireland or Sussex, she faced financial responsibilities at a young age. To support her mother and brother, she initially earned a living as a painter, specializing in miniatures. Her artistic talents later complemented her literary pursuits, as she provided illustrations for several of her own published volumes.

As a writer, Costello produced an extensive corpus of work that included articles, poetry, songs, novels, and historical non-fiction. She was particularly well-regarded in her era as a popular travel writer, drawing on her extensive travels to write detailed accounts of her journeys. She also wrote extensively on French history and compiled biographical accounts of historical figures, most notably in her work Memoirs of Eminent Englishwomen, which she illustrated herself.

Beyond her original prose and historical writings, Costello made significant contributions as a translator and compiler of poetry. Her highly regarded anthology, The Rose Garden of Persia, introduced English-speaking readers to Persian poetic traditions. This compilation proved to be one of her most enduring works, receiving multiple reissues in the decades following her death in 1870.
