Thomas Allan Croal was a British historian, author, and journalist active during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in December 1832, Croal developed a diverse writing career that spanned historical documentation, travel writing, and journalistic reporting. His literary contributions frequently focused on the geography, history, and infrastructure of Scotland, reflecting a deep interest in both the natural landscape and the technological developments of his era.
Among his most notable publications is A Book About Travelling, Past and Present, published in 1877, which explored the evolution of transit and human movement. He followed this with Scottish Loch Scenery in 1882, showcasing his appreciation for the Scottish landscape. Later in his career, he collaborated with Michael Myers Shoemaker on the historical volume Palaces and Prisons of Mary, Queen of Scots, published in 1903, which examined the life and confinement of the historic monarch.
In addition to his standalone books, Croal worked as a professional journalist, serving as a correspondent for The Railway News in London. His expertise in transportation history and infrastructure led him to contribute a specialized section on Scotland's transport system to Francis Hindes Groome's comprehensive reference work, Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland: A Graphic and Accurate Description of Every Place in Scotland, in 1901. Croal passed away on April 4, 1907, leaving behind a legacy of detailed historical and geographical documentation.
