Richmal Crompton Lamburn, who wrote under the pen name Richmal Crompton, was a celebrated English author best known for her enduring contributions to children's literature. Born in 1890, Crompton initially worked as a schoolteacher before turning to writing full-time. She achieved widespread popularity with the creation of William Brown, the scruffy, well-meaning, yet perpetually mischievous eleven-year-old protagonist of her Just William series. First published in 1922, the humorous short stories and books featuring William and his band of 'Outlaws' became a cultural phenomenon, capturing the imagination of generations of readers with their sharp wit and affectionate satire of middle-class English life. Although Crompton is primarily remembered for her children's books, she was also a prolific author of adult fiction, publishing numerous novels and short story collections that explored contemporary social themes. She continued to write and publish actively throughout her life, maintaining the popularity of her signature character until her death in 1969.
