George Christopher Davies was an English writer, photographer, and solicitor who played a pioneering role in introducing the Norfolk Broads to a wider public audience. Born in Oswestry in 1849, he was the eldest child of the geologist David Christopher Davies. He initially trained in the legal profession, qualifying as a lawyer in 1871. His career and life took a decisive turn that same year when he read an account of the Norfolk Broads, which inspired him to move to Norfolk and join the legal practice of Abel Tillett in Norwich.
Once established in Norwich, Davies balanced his legal duties with his creative pursuits. As a prolific writer and photographer, he focused his talents on documenting the scenic waterways of East Anglia. His publications and photographs were instrumental in fostering popular awareness and appreciation of the Norfolk Broads, helping to establish the area as a major center for recreational boating and tourism. He remained a prominent figure in the Norwich community until his death in late 1922.
