Richard "Rick" Davies was an English musician, singer, and songwriter who achieved international prominence as the founder, keyboardist, and vocalist of the progressive rock band Supertramp. Born in 1944, Davies served as the band's sole constant member throughout its history, guiding its musical direction from its self-titled debut album in 1970 onward. He was highly regarded for his distinctive rhythmic blues piano solos, jazz-influenced progressive rock compositions, and cynical lyrical themes.\n\nFor over a decade, Davies shared songwriting and lead vocal duties with Roger Hodgson. This partnership created a compelling vocal contrast, pairing Hodgson's high tenor with Davies's deeper, raspy baritone. Despite this contrast, Davies occasionally utilized a falsetto register that closely resembled Hodgson's style, as heard on popular tracks like "Goodbye Stranger" and "My Kind of Lady." Following Hodgson's departure from the group in 1983, Davies became Supertramp's sole lead vocalist and continued to lead the band.\n\nOver his career, Davies wrote or co-wrote many of Supertramp's most recognizable hits, including "Bloody Well Right," "Cannonball," and "I'm Beggin' You." His contributions helped define the band's signature blend of art rock, pop, and blues, securing their place in the landscape of 1970s and 1980s rock music. Davies passed away in September 2025.
