James De Mille was an early Canadian novelist and academic who was active during the mid-to-late nineteenth century. Born in 1833, he balanced his intellectual pursuits with a career in higher education, serving as a professor at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia.

In addition to his academic work, De Mille became a prolific writer of popular fiction. Throughout the late 1860s and into the 1870s, he published numerous works, establishing himself as a notable early figure in Canada's literary history prior to his death in 1880.
