Joseph Devlin was an Irish journalist and highly influential nationalist politician whose career spanned the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in 1871, Devlin established himself as a key figure in Irish political life, balancing his work in journalism with a long and active career in parliamentary politics.\n\nDevlin served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Irish Parliamentary Party in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, holding office from 1902 to 1922, and later returning to Westminster from 1929 until his death in 1934. Following the partition of Ireland, he continued his political leadership closer to home, serving as an MP and the leader of the Nationalist Party in the Parliament of Northern Ireland.\n\nThroughout his political career, Devlin was recognized for his distinct presence and communication style. The Irish politician Tim Healy famously referred to him as 'the duodecimo Demosthenes,' a comparison to the classical Greek orator that Devlin accepted as a compliment. Devlin remained an active and influential political voice until his death in January 1934.
