Introduced by AMD in October 1993, the Élan family of 32-bit systems on a chip (SoCs) was designed specifically for embedded systems. The series began with the Am386SC processor, which integrated an Am386SXLV CPU core with a suite of PC/AT-compatible peripherals. These initial offerings were marketed as the Élan SC300 and Élan SC310.
Throughout its production, the Élan line was backed by a long-term supply guarantee to satisfy the requirements of the embedded processor market, achieving a reasonable level of adoption. However, the product line was abruptly discontinued in August 2003 following AMD's acquisition of the Geode division from National Semiconductor.
