Sir George Brisbane Scott Douglas, 5th Baronet, was a Scottish poet, academic, and writer active during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in Gibraltar on December 22, 1856, to a native mother, Doña Sanchez de Pina, Douglas was educated at the prestigious Harrow School before attending Trinity College, Cambridge. He inherited his family's baronetcy and the historic estate of Springwood Park, located near Kelso in the Scottish Borders, which had been in his family for five generations.
Throughout his life, Douglas successfully balanced the demanding responsibilities of managing his large country estate with his passion for literature and academia. He published his first book in 1880 and went on to author numerous works of poetry and prose, often publishing under the shortened name of Sir George Douglas. His writings frequently reflected his academic interests and his deep connection to the Scottish Borders region.
Douglas never married, dedicating his years to his literary pursuits and his estate. He passed away on June 22, 1935, at the age of 78. Following his death, he was succeeded by his nephew, James Louis Fitzroy Scott Douglas, marking the end of the family's active residency at Springwood Park, as his successor never resided at the ancestral home.
