Marjorie Doggett (1921–2010) was a pioneering Singaporean photographer, heritage conservationist, and animal welfare advocate. Born Marjorie Millest, she made significant contributions to documenting and preserving Singapore's cultural and architectural history during the mid-20th century. Her photographic work captured a rapidly changing urban landscape, creating an invaluable historical record of the region's heritage.\n\nDoggett is best remembered for her landmark 1957 photo-book, Characters of Light. This publication was the first book dedicated to capturing Singapore's urban landscape and holds the distinction of being the first local photographic book produced by a woman. Her striking architectural photographs documented historic buildings, many of which have since been altered or demolished. Today, her extensive collection of prints and films is preserved at the National Archives of Singapore.\n\nIn addition to her photographic and conservation efforts, Doggett was a passionate advocate for animal welfare. She was a founding member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Singapore, dedicating much of her life to the protection and care of animals. Through both her artistic documentation and her civic activism, Doggett left a lasting legacy on Singapore's cultural and social landscape.
