Carey Wentworth Styles was a nineteenth-century American journalist, lawyer, and political figure who left a lasting legacy on Southern print media. He is most widely recognized as the founder of The Atlanta Constitution, which would grow to become one of the region's most influential daily newspapers. Over the course of his highly active career, Styles established a reputation as a prolific media builder, founding or writing for at least twenty-one different newspapers.\n\nHis personal and professional life was divided almost equally among the states of South Carolina, Georgia, and Texas. A veteran of two wars, Styles was known for his involvement in various military adventures and intense political disputes. Despite a turbulent history that included killing a Georgia State Representative earlier in his life, he later went on to serve briefly as a member of the Georgia Senate.
