Nathan Drake was an English essayist and medical doctor who lived and worked during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Born in York on January 15, 1766, at his family's home in Precentor's Court, he was the son of Nathan Drake, a local artist. Growing up in an environment connected to the arts, the younger Drake pursued a dual path, establishing himself both as a practicing physician and as a dedicated man of letters.

As a writer, Drake is primarily remembered for his scholarly contributions to literary history. His most notable achievement was a comprehensive book that compiled and summarized the existing knowledge of William Shakespeare available during his era. This work served as an important resource for contemporary readers, consolidating historical and biographical details about the playwright. Drake spent his life balancing his medical duties with his literary endeavors until his death on June 7, 1836.
