Gaylord McIlvaine Du Bois was a highly prolific American writer who made significant contributions to the comic book industry, comic strips, Big Little Books, and juvenile adventure novels. Active throughout the mid-20th century, Du Bois is estimated to have written over 3,000 comic book stories during his extensive career. He is perhaps best remembered for his long-running work on the Tarzan comic books for Dell Comics and Gold Key Comics, a tenure that spanned from 1946 until 1971.
An avid outdoorsman, Du Bois brought his personal love for nature into his writing, which frequently featured natural and wilderness settings. His creative strengths lay in Westerns, jungle adventures, and animal reality comics, genres that allowed him to explore themes of survival and exploration. While he created several original features for Western Publishing—such as "Captain Venture: Beneath the Sea," "Leopard Girl," and "Two Against the Jungle"—the majority of his prolific output consisted of crafting engaging stories for licensed properties, where his reliable and evocative storytelling made him a mainstay of the mid-century comic book industry.
