Ernest Augustus, Duke of York and Albany (1674–1728), was a prominent military figure and ecclesiastic of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The younger brother of King George I of Great Britain, he pursued a career in military service, fighting under Emperor Leopold I.
During his military career, Ernest Augustus served with distinction in major European conflicts, including the Nine Years' War and the War of the Spanish Succession. In 1715, he transitioned to a significant ecclesiastical and administrative role when he became the Prince-Bishop of Osnabrück, a position he held until his death.
