Gertrude Caroline Ederle was an acclaimed American competition swimmer who achieved historic prominence in the early twentieth century. Born in 1905, she established herself as an elite athlete, ultimately becoming an Olympic champion and holding world records in five different swimming events.
Ederle secured her place in history on August 6, 1926, when she became the first woman to successfully swim across the English Channel. This monumental feat captured the public imagination and challenged contemporary views on female athleticism. In recognition of her historic crossing, the press celebrated her achievements and dubbed her the "Queen of the Waves." She passed away in 2003.
