Mona Nemer is a distinguished Lebanese-Canadian scientist and academic administrator specializing in molecular genetics and cardiac regeneration. Born in 1957, Nemer has dedicated her career to understanding cardiovascular health, particularly cardiovascular cell differentiation. Her research has significantly contributed to the field of cardiac development, positioning her as a leading figure in Canadian scientific research.
Throughout her academic career, Nemer has held several prestigious positions. She served as a professor of pharmacology at the University of Montreal and directed the Cardiac Development Research Unit at the Institut de recherches cliniques de Montréal (IRCM), where she held a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair. She later joined the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Medicine as a professor of biochemistry, also serving as the university's Vice-President of Research from 2006 to 2017.
In September 2017, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed Nemer as Canada's Chief Science Advisor, marking the reinstatement of the national science advisory role for the first time since 2008. In this capacity, she provides independent scientific advice to the Canadian government, bridging the gap between scientific research and public policy.
