Francis Finlay (1926–2016) was a highly regarded English actor whose career spanned several decades across stage, television, and film. Born in August 1926, Finlay established himself as a versatile performer, earning critical acclaim and industry recognition for his dramatic range. He is perhaps best remembered for his portrayal of Iago in the 1965 film adaptation of Othello, a landmark performance that earned him an Academy Award nomination.
In addition to his success in cinema, Finlay was a prominent and familiar figure on British television. He secured his first leading television role in 1971 as the titular character in the series Casanova, which significantly raised his public profile and led to appearances on popular entertainment programs such as The Morecambe and Wise Show. His television career also included a notable role in the acclaimed drama series Bouquet of Barbed Wire. Over his career, Finlay received four BAFTA nominations, winning the prestigious award in 1974 for his outstanding television performances.
Finlay's international work further demonstrated his artistic versatility. He starred alongside the famous Italian actress Stefania Sandrelli in Tinto Brass's film The Key, which achieved major commercial success as the highest-grossing Italian film of the 1983–1984 season.
