Biography of Estes Kefauver

Charles Louis Fontenay (1917–2007) was an American journalist and author who successfully navigated the worlds of professional news reporting and speculative fiction. Born in 1917, Fontenay established a robust career in journalism, working for major news organizations and regional publications. His professional background in reporting provided a grounded foundation for his extensive writing career, which spanned several decades.

In the field of journalism, Fontenay served in prominent editorial roles, most notably as an editor for the Nashville Tennessean. His reporting career also included significant tenures with major wire services and media companies, including the Associated Press and the Gannett News Service. Alongside his daily journalistic duties, Fontenay was a dedicated writer of science fiction, producing numerous novels and short stories that contributed to the mid-century speculative fiction landscape.

Beyond his science fiction output, Fontenay also contributed to historical and political literature. He authored a well-regarded biography of Estes Kefauver, a prominent American politician of the New Deal era. Following his retirement, Fontenay relocated to St. Petersburg, Florida, where he remained active in the literary community. He continued to write and publish science fiction works until shortly before his death in 2007.
