Richard Ford was a nineteenth-century English travel writer, illustrator, and art collector whose vivid accounts of his journeys helped shape British perceptions of Spain. Born into an upper-class family in Chelsea, Ford received his education at Oxford before embarking on a life of travel, art appreciation, and literary pursuit. In 1830, he relocated to Spain, where he spent several years traveling extensively, sketching the landscape, and gathering detailed observations on Spanish culture and geography.
Upon returning to England, Ford compiled his extensive notes and drawings into his most celebrated work, A Handbook for Travellers in Spain, published in 1845. Widely regarded as a masterpiece of travel literature, the book offered readers an erudite, highly detailed, and engaging guide to the country. Beyond his writing, Ford was a talented artist who illustrated his own works and those of his contemporaries, and he maintained close friendships with many of the leading literary and artistic figures of his era.
