William Rodger 'Roger' Jardine is a prominent South African business executive, former government official, and social activist. Born in 1965, Jardine achieved early distinction when, at the age of 29, he was appointed Director General of South Africa's Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, making him the youngest director general in the nation's history. During his tenure in public service, he played a pivotal role in shaping South Africa's post-apartheid scientific and technological landscape.
Among his key contributions to public policy, Jardine worked on nuclear disarmament initiatives and co-authored the country's first White paper on science and technology in 1996. This landmark policy document laid the groundwork for major national scientific infrastructure, including the Southern African Large Telescope, the Technology Innovation Agency, and the South African National Space Agency.
In his subsequent corporate career, Jardine has held major leadership positions across the financial and technology sectors. He has served as the Chairperson of FirstRand and the Centre for Development and Enterprise. More recently, he was appointed Chairman-designate of Old Mutual and co-founded Mura Space, a start-up aimed at supporting an orbital and sub-orbital space launch value chain in southern Africa.
