Lilian Garis was an American author and pioneering journalist who became one of the most prolific writers of juvenile fiction in the early twentieth century. Born Lilian Cleo McNamara in 1873, she began her professional career in journalism, making history as the first female reporter hired by the Newark Evening News in New Jersey. This early career in newspaper writing laid the foundation for her later, extensive work in fiction.\n\nAlongside her husband, Howard R. Garis, she transitioned into writing children's literature. Between approximately 1915 and the early 1940s, Garis authored hundreds of books aimed at young readers.
