Mary Eliza Bakewell Gaunt (1861–1942) was a pioneering Australian novelist, journalist, and travel writer. Born in Chiltern, Victoria, she grew up in a period of significant colonial development, which later influenced her literary perspectives. Gaunt broke traditional boundaries for women of her era, pursuing a career in writing and embarking on extensive, often solitary, journeys across the globe.
Her literary career officially commenced with the publication of her first novel, Dave's Sweetheart, in 1894.
