John D. Graham, born Ivan Gratianovitch Dombrowsky in Kyiv, Ukraine, was a highly influential modernist painter, art collector, and theorist. After immigrating to New York in 1920, Graham began studying painting in his thirties, quickly developing a deep fascination with modernism. He became a pivotal figure in the New York art scene, not only through his own creative output but also as an active champion, curator, and collector of modern art.\n\nGraham is widely recognized for his role as a mentor to a younger generation of American artists who would go on to pioneer Abstract Expressionism. His guidance and aesthetic theories helped shape the direction of mid-century American art. Later in his career, during the 1940s and 1950s, Graham shifted away from pure abstraction to develop a unique figurative style inspired by classical masters, which he famously debuted in a series of paintings and drawings depicting Russian soldiers.
