Julian Brown is a contemporary British artist and painter based in London. Born in 1974, Brown pursued his formal artistic education at Liverpool John Moores University from 1993 to 1996, before continuing his studies at the prestigious Royal Academy Schools in London, graduating in 2001. Over his career, he has developed a distinctive visual style that draws heavily from personal history and cultural heritage.
Brown's paintings are characterized by their engagement with childhood memories and the traditional folk art of his mother's native Poland. These influences manifest in works that explore pattern, color, and memory, bridging contemporary abstraction with historical craft traditions. He has exhibited his art both nationally and internationally, establishing a reputation within the modern British art scene.
In recognition of his contributions to contemporary painting, Brown was shortlisted for the Marmite Prize in Painting IV in 2012 and long-listed for the John Moores Painting Prize in 2016. He is also an active member of the Contemporary British Painting artist-led organization, continuing to live and work in London.
