John Barton Gruelle (1880–1938) was an American artist, political cartoonist, children's book author, illustrator, and storyteller. The son of the notable Hoosier Group painter Richard Gruelle, he grew up in an artistic environment that shaped his future career. Over his lifetime, Gruelle established himself as a versatile creative voice, producing a vast body of work that entertained both children and adults across the United States.\n\nGruelle is internationally recognized as the creator of the iconic Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy dolls. These cherished characters became the centerpieces of dozens of children's books that Gruelle both wrote and illustrated.
