Manly Palmer Hall (1901–1990) was a Canadian-born author, lecturer, and mystic whose prolific career in the United States spanned seven decades. He became one of the most prominent figures in twentieth-century esotericism, delivering thousands of lectures and publishing over 150 volumes dedicated to philosophy, comparative religion, astrology, and ancient mysteries. His work sought to bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and modern intellectual inquiry.
Hall's magnum opus, The Secret Teachings of All Ages, was published in 1928 when he was only twenty-seven years old. This monumental, encyclopedic outline of hermetic, kabbalistic, and Rosicrucian symbolic philosophy remains a foundational text in occult literature. Through this and other writings, Hall explored the hidden meanings behind world mythologies and spiritual traditions, advocating for a universal philosophy that transcends sectarian divisions.
In 1934, Hall founded the Philosophical Research Society (PRS) in Los Angeles, California. Designed as a non-sectarian center for the study of history, mythology, and philosophy, the institution housed a vast library of rare books and manuscripts that Hall collected throughout his life. He spent his remaining decades lecturing, writing, and guiding the society, leaving behind a significant legacy in the fields of alternative spirituality and metaphysics.
