Timothy Damien Allman (1944–2024) was an American journalist, historian, and author who made significant contributions to foreign correspondence and historical writing. Over his career, he became well-known for his interviews with major global political figures, including Yasser Arafat, Helmut Kohl, Boris Yeltsin, and Manuel Antonio Noriega. Many of these high-profile interviews and reports were published in Vanity Fair, where Allman served as a foreign correspondent.
Beyond his journalism, Allman was an influential commentator on foreign policy. He is credited with introducing the term "Rogue State" into modern foreign policy discourse and was the first to popularize the phrase "secret war" to describe clandestine United States involvement in foreign conflicts. His analytical approach to international affairs helped shape public understanding of covert military actions and diplomatic relations during the late twentieth century.
Allman also wrote extensively about his home country, particularly focusing on the state of Florida. He authored two best-selling, award-winning books examining how the history of Florida reflects broader American themes. His 2013 book, Finding Florida: The True History of the Sunshine State, received critical acclaim and was long-listed for the National Book Award, cementing his reputation as a meticulous and provocative historian.
