Born in 1866, Per August Leonard Hallström was a prominent Swedish writer whose career spanned several decades of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Throughout his long life, which ended in 1960, Hallström worked across multiple literary genres, earning recognition as a short-story writer, dramatist, poet, and novelist. His diverse body of work established him as a central figure in Swedish literature.

Beyond his creative writing, Hallström played a major role in the country's cultural institutions. In 1908, he was elected to the Swedish Academy, one of Sweden's most prestigious cultural bodies. His influence within the institution culminated in his appointment as Permanent Secretary, a position he held from 1931 until 1941, guiding the Academy through a critical decade.
