Clare Winger Harris was a pioneering American writer who made history in the 1920s as the first woman to publish science fiction stories under her own name in genre magazines. Beginning her publishing career in 1926, she quickly gained popularity among readers of the era. The majority of her pioneering work appeared in Amazing Stories, the highly influential publication edited by Hugo Gernsback, where she established herself as a significant voice in early American science fiction.\n\nOver her career, Harris published a total of twelve short stories. Her narratives were notable for their imaginative concepts and often featured strong, active female characters, a rarity in the male-dominated science fiction landscape of the early twentieth century. In 1947, eleven of her stories were compiled and published in the collection Away From the Here and Now.\n\nAlthough her active writing career was relatively brief, Harris's contributions to the genre have received renewed appreciation in the modern era. Her complete works were finally collected in 2019 under the title The Artificial Man and Other Stories. Today, her pioneering role is celebrated through her inclusion in prominent anthologies, such as the Library of America's The Future Is Female! and Wesleyan University Press's Sisters of Tomorrow, cementing her legacy as a trailblazer for women in science fiction.
