Eliza Haywood (c. 1693 – 1756), born Elizabeth Fowler, was an English writer, actress, and publisher who became one of the most prominent and prolific literary figures of the eighteenth century. Over the course of her career, she produced more than seventy works, spanning a diverse range of genres including fiction, drama, poetry, translations, conduct literature, and periodicals. Her immense output earned her a reputation as an exceptionally industrious writer during an era already known for its high literary production.

Today, Haywood is recognized as one of the foundational figures of the English novel. She gained significant early fame with her novel Love in Excess (1719–1720), which remains one of her most celebrated works. Alongside her contemporaries, she helped shape the early development of English fiction, particularly through her exploration of amatory themes and the complexities of contemporary social relations.

In addition to her creative writing, Haywood was active in the theatrical world as an actress and was involved in the publishing industry. Although her critical reputation fluctuated in the centuries following her death, a major resurgence of academic interest and recognition of her literary contributions began in the 1980s, cementing her status as a crucial voice in eighteenth-century British literature.
