Katharine Blodgett Gebbie was a distinguished American astrophysicist and civil servant who dedicated her career to scientific leadership and the advancement of the physical sciences. She is best remembered for her pivotal role at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), where she served as a key administrator and helped foster an environment of world-class scientific achievement and revolutionary physics research.

Gebbie was the founding director of the Physical Measurement Laboratory at NIST. Prior to this role, she led its two immediate predecessor organizations: the Physics Laboratory and the Center for Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, serving as the sole director for both. Over her twenty-two years of leadership across these institutions, her management supported groundbreaking research, culminating in four of her laboratory's scientists being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, a testament to the extraordinary research culture she helped cultivate.

Her contributions to the scientific community and public service were widely recognized throughout her lifetime. In 2015, NIST honored her legacy by naming the Katharine Blodgett Gebbie Laboratory Building in Boulder, Colorado, in her honor. Her career exemplified a profound commitment to fostering scientific excellence, mentoring researchers, and strengthening national scientific infrastructure.
