John Holbrook Vance, widely known by his pen name Jack Vance, was a highly acclaimed American author who made significant contributions to the genres of science fiction, fantasy, and mystery. Born in 1916, Vance began his career publishing short stories in science fiction magazines before expanding into novellas and novels. Over a career spanning several decades, he established himself as a distinctive voice in American literature, recognized for his rich world-building and unique stylistic flair.

Throughout his career, Vance received numerous prestigious accolades. He was named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 1997 and was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2001. His work garnered multiple Hugo Awards, including for his novellas The Dragon Masters and The Last Castle, the latter of which also won a Nebula Award. He also excelled in the mystery genre, winning an Edgar Award for his debut mystery novel, The Man in the Cage, and writing under various pseudonyms, including Ellery Queen.

Vance's influence and legacy are preserved in extensive collections, including a 44-volume Integral Edition of his complete works. Described by The New York Times Magazine as "one of American literature's most distinctive and undervalued voices," his writings have been translated into multiple languages worldwide. Vance passed away at his home in Oakland, California, in 2013 at the age of 96.
