William Hale White (1831–1913) was a British writer and civil servant who published his literary work under the pseudonym Mark Rutherford. Known for his retiring disposition, White actively avoided public life, preferring to remain largely unknown to the world in person.

To further obscure his identity, some of the works attributed to Mark Rutherford were presented as being edited by a second persona, Reuben Shapcott. This dual use of pseudonyms kept White's personal life distinct from his literary presence, as remarked upon in his obituary in The Times.
