Lewis William Gordon Pugh is a pioneering British-South African endurance swimmer and environmental advocate. Renowned as the first person to complete a long-distance swim across every ocean in the world, Pugh utilizes high-profile swims in vulnerable ecosystems to draw global attention to environmental crises. His efforts have earned him the moniker 'Sir Edmund Hillary of swimming' and led to his appointment as the first United Nations Patron of the Oceans in 2013.

Pugh's landmark campaigns include a historic 2007 swim across the North Pole to highlight melting Arctic sea ice, and a 2010 swim across a glacial lake on Mount Everest to raise awareness about Himalayan glacial depletion. In 2018, he swam the entire length of the English Channel to advocate for the protection of thirty percent of the world's oceans by 2030.

Beyond his physical feats, Pugh engages in environmental diplomacy. His 'Speedo Diplomacy'—which involved swimming in Antarctic waters and shuttling between the United States and Russia—played a pivotal role in the 2016 creation of the Ross Sea marine reserve, the largest marine reserve in the world. He also serves as an adjunct professor of International Law at the University of Cape Town.
