Rupert Raleigh Hughes (1872–1956) was a highly versatile American author, filmmaker, and historian whose career spanned several creative disciplines. Born into a prominent family—he was the brother of Howard R. Hughes Sr. and the uncle of the famous billionaire Howard R. Hughes Jr.—Rupert Hughes established his own legacy as a novelist, music composer, and military officer. He also made significant contributions to the early American film industry, working as both a director and an Oscar-nominated screenwriter.

Beyond his work in fiction and cinema, Hughes achieved considerable recognition as a biographer. His most notable literary achievement was a meticulous, three-volume scholarly biography of George Washington. This work was highly regarded by contemporary historians for its pioneering efforts to demythologize the first American president, presenting a more realistic and humanized portrait of Washington than had previously been common in popular history.

In his later years, Hughes became increasingly active in political and professional organizations. A staunch anti-Communist, he served during the 1940s as the president of the American Writers Association, an organization dedicated to uniting anti-Communist writers. Throughout his life, Hughes remained a prominent figure in American cultural and intellectual circles, bridging the worlds of popular entertainment, serious historical scholarship, and political activism.
