The Virginia High School League (VHSL) serves as the principal sanctioning organization for interscholastic athletic competitions among public high schools in the U.S. state of Virginia. Beyond athletic events, the league has a long-standing role in academic competitions; it originally sponsored debate and continues to oversee state championships in several academic activities.
While the VHSL governs public school events, private and religious schools, along with homeschooled student teams, operate under different sanctioning bodies. The largest of these alternative organizations is the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association. Proposals introduced in the Virginia General Assembly to mandate that the VHSL allow homeschooled students to compete for their local public high schools have not succeeded in passing.
