Edward Paulette Hurt was a highly influential American sports coach and athletic director, best known for his historic tenure at Morgan State College (now Morgan State University). Born in 1900, Hurt played college football at Lincoln University and Howard University before transitioning into coaching. He began his head coaching career at Virginia Theological Seminary and College in 1925, serving there until 1928 before moving to Morgan State, where he would establish a legendary legacy over the next several decades.\n\nAt Morgan State, Hurt coached football, basketball, and track, leading his teams to extraordinary success. Under his guidance, the Morgan State Bears football teams secured six black college football national championships and 14 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) titles. Across all three sports, his programs amassed 36 CIAA championships and produced two Pro Football Hall of Famers as well as an Olympic gold medalist. Hurt also served as the university's athletic director from 1958 to 1970.\n\nRecognized for his immense contributions to collegiate athletics, particularly within Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hurt was inducted into the USA National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1975 and the HBCU Hall of Fame in 1978. He passed away in 1989, leaving behind a profound legacy as one of the most successful coaches in American collegiate sports history.
