Martha Jones is a fictional character in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who and its spin-off Torchwood. Portrayed by Freema Agyeman, she is the show's first female Black companion, accompanying the Tenth Doctor after Rose Tyler and before Donna Noble. Created by Russell T Davies, the character was designed to feature throughout the 2007 series, with subsequent guest appearances in Torchwood and the 2010 Doctor Who special "The End of Time."
Within the series' narrative, Martha begins as a medical student who joins the Doctor's time-traveling adventures following an incident at her hospital. After more than a year of travel, she departs his company after recognizing the unhealthy nature of their relationship. Back on Earth, she completes her medical degree, becomes engaged, and gains independence by working with the paranormal military organizations UNIT and Torchwood.
