William Roderick James, known professionally as Will James, was a prominent Canadian-American author and illustrator who dedicated his career to capturing the life and culture of the American West. Born in 1892, James became widely recognized for his authentic depictions of cowboy life, drawing on his own experiences to craft both written narratives and visual art. His distinctive illustrations, which focused heavily on cowboy and rodeo scenes, followed in the artistic tradition of Charles Russell and served as the visual backbone for his published writings.
James wrote numerous "cowboy" stories tailored for both adult and children audiences. His most celebrated work, Smoky the Cowhorse, won the prestigious Newbery Medal in 1927, cementing his place in American children's literature. Through his books, which he illustrated himself, James brought the rugged reality and folklore of the frontier to a broad reading public. In recognition of his enduring contributions to Western heritage and art, James was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in 1992.
