Elijah Johnson is a fictional character from the long-running Australian Channel Seven soap opera Home and Away. Portrayed by actor Jay Laga'aia, the character was specifically developed with Laga'aia in mind. He made his debut in 2010, departing temporarily for other projects before returning later that year, and ultimately exiting the series in April 2012.
Introduced as the new Reverend for the local church in Summer Bay, Elijah was designed to subvert traditional clerical stereotypes. Described as a muscular, tough, and handsome Polynesian man, his physical appearance contrasted with his religious collar. His primary narrative arc centered on his romantic relationship with established character Leah Patterson-Baker. Their relationship faced numerous obstacles, including prejudice from the religious sector, parental interference, and the challenges of a long-distance relationship, which eventually culminated in Elijah leaving for missionary work in Africa.
Upon his return to the show in 2011, Elijah's storyline shifted toward a new family dynamic when he entered a green-card marriage with Grace Johnson to help her sick son gain entry to Australia. This development effectively ended his prospects of reconciling with Leah. Subsequent storylines followed a downward spiral for the character, depicting a series of unfortunate events that turned his life upside down. Elijah received mixed reviews from critics and viewers, with some praising Laga'aia's addition to the cast, while others reacted less favorably to his portrayal as a clergyman.
