Gottfried Keller was an influential Swiss poet and author who made significant contributions to German-language literature during the nineteenth century. Born in 1819, Keller established himself as a major literary figure, eventually becoming recognized as one of the most popular and enduring narrators of the literary realism movement during the latter part of the century.
Among his most acclaimed achievements is the novel Green Henry (originally published as Der grüne Heinrich), which remains a cornerstone of his literary legacy. In addition to his longer fiction, Keller is also highly regarded for Seldwyla Folks (Die Leute von Seldwyla), a celebrated cycle of novellas that showcases his mastery of shorter narrative forms. Through these key works and his poetic output, Keller secured his reputation as a defining voice of his era before his death in 1890.
