Sophia Wells Royce Williams was an American civic activist, philanthropist, and photographer who made notable contributions to American cultural preservation. Alongside her husband, Talcott Williams, she engaged in philanthropic efforts that significantly enriched the holdings of major American museums. Together, the couple donated a substantial and valuable collection of Moroccan ceramics and various other cultural materials to both the Smithsonian Institution and the Penn Museum.

Beyond her work as a photographer and civic figure, Williams also occupied a place in American art history as a subject for the prominent painter Thomas Eakins. She posed for Eakins's portrait titled The Black Fan, a work that is now preserved and exhibited in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
