Edward John Kenney, commonly known as E. J. Kenney, was a prominent British Latinist and classical scholar who dedicated his career to the study of ancient Roman literature. Born in 1924, Kenney became a leading authority on textual criticism and the transmission of classical texts, focusing much of his scholarly attention on the works of the Roman poets Ovid and Lucretius.
Kenney spent the majority of his academic career at Cambridge University, where he held the prestigious position of Kennedy Professor of Latin. He served in this role until his retirement in 1984, after which he continued his association with the university as an emeritus fellow of Peterhouse. His long tenure at Cambridge established him as a central figure in twentieth-century classical studies.
Throughout his career, Kenney's research emphasized the meticulous analysis of manuscript traditions. His expertise in textual criticism allowed him to reconstruct and interpret classical Latin poetry with high precision, earning him a reputation as one of the foremost Latinists of his generation. He remained an active and respected member of the academic community until his death in late 2019.
