Damon Francis Knight was an influential American science fiction author, editor, and literary critic whose work significantly shaped the mid-twentieth-century science fiction landscape. Born in 1922, Knight developed a reputation not only for his own creative writing but also for his sharp, analytical criticism of the genre. He was a key figure in advocating for higher literary standards within science fiction, helping the genre transition into a more mature and self-reflective art form during the post-war era.

As a fiction writer, Knight is widely celebrated for his short stories, most notably the 1950 classic "To Serve Man." This darkly comedic tale about seemingly benevolent extraterrestrials visiting Earth was later adapted into one of the most famous episodes of the television anthology series The Twilight Zone. Beyond his short fiction, Knight was a prolific editor of anthologies and a dedicated mentor to emerging writers in the field. In 1963, he married fellow author Kate Wilhelm, establishing a prominent literary partnership that lasted until his death in 2002.
