Charles Paul de Kock was a nineteenth-century French novelist who achieved immense commercial success. Born in Passy, Paris, in 1793, he went on to become one of the most popular and high-selling writers of his era.

Despite his broad public appeal and high book sales, De Kock's literary reputation was less favorable. Critics and the literary establishment often dismissed his output as low-brow and characterized by poor taste.

In the modern era, De Kock's prominence has faded. By the early twenty-first century, his works had largely disappeared from active publication, with literary commentators noting that his writings had not received a new English edition or translation in at least a hundred years, outside of print-on-demand reproductions of historical editions.
