Originally from Tromsø, she relocated to the Svalbard archipelago in January 2009 with her husband and two children to work at the University Centre in Svalbard. Following her move, she became active in local governance, serving as a board member for the school board, the board of city operations, and the port authority by 2011.\n\nKristoffersen's political career advanced in May 2011 when she won the Labour Party's mayoral nomination, defeating Anita Johansen in a 15-to-5 vote. In the subsequent election, the Labour Party secured 43 percent of the vote, leading to her election as mayor to succeed Kjell Mork. She served in this mayoral capacity from 2011 to 2015.
